The Revolutionists is about four very real historical characters, a playwright, a rebel, a queen, and an assassin, brought together in a dramatized fashion with modern language. The story is both comic and tragic, as we learned to love the characters while they debated activism, feminism, and political violence. As the sound designer I wanted to emphasize the stakes of events as they unfolded, and project the emotional state changes during scene transitions.
The top of the show begins with the stage direction of the sound of breath, followed by execution during the times of unrest. The reverb tail of the guillotine is intentionally out of proportion with reality, as I wanted to fill the space in an unrealistic sense before starting the show proper.
This piece of transition music was written to cross between the moment where several characters discover one of their companions is set to be executed, and the scene of the execution itself.
This short piece of music covered one of the few calm transitions between scenes.
This piece of music was written with the choreographed exit of one of the characters who has just been executed.
